Overview
Scot Dilbeck was a native Oklahoman, devoted husband, father, grandfather, decorated veteran whose life ended much too soon. He became a victim of DUI accident on June 10, 2019….He was just trying to get home to his family.
Nobody asked Scot if he wanted to die, he wasn’t given the decision and he wasn’t given the opportunity to fight or find a way out. He wasn’t able to say goodbye to his family or tell them he loved them one more time. He died next to his car on the ground surrounded by strangers and chaos without the ability to decide his fate.
The offender was no stranger to DUI offenses. In the 10 arrests prior to this accident, 8 were DUI related and a felony warrant was active an another state when he struck and killed Scot.
The result was a family shattered and broken hearts of friends and colleagues he left behind.
Early life
Scot’s beginnings began as humbly as most people. He was born in Jay, Oklahoma June 2nd, 1971.
His mother, Diana, found herself a single mom whom had already lost one child. Scot never knew his father (which we hear was not a bad thing) but was raised and took the name of his step dad.
His mother then had a daughter, Kathy, which provided Scot big brother rights which he did not waste…
His mother recalls that he was a typical boy who liked getting dirty and enjoyed, fireworks and found a love for dirt bikes and eventually motorcycles.
He spent his school years in different areas but ended up a band geek graduating from Charles Page High School.
Veteran Service
Scot jumped right from high school straight into the Navy. His reason? It was something to do…lol. He was soon deployed and spent most of his time in the Gulf during the Gulf War.
During that time he earned a bronze star. He was not really detailed and it was his reason and his right for not discussing the reason that medal was earned and we all respected him for that.
After his term was over, he spent some time in California before returning home to Oklahoma…not knowing what was to come next.
Personal Life
Scot was a very private man and was very particular about security. He was a kind person who never met a stranger. He had the mind of an engineer and always had brilliant ways of solving problems. His passions were, motorcycles, gaming, wind chimes, clocks, and antiques.
He met his wife, Rose, at work. They started out as friends and it didn’t look like it would go beyond that because at the time he was not really interested in kids…she had 3. The friendship grew and over time he grew interested and began to pursue her. It took him a little time but he eventually wore her down and they became an item.
She once asked him why he changed his mind about taking on a ready made family. He responded, “Because you got cuter, and cuter, and cuter”. Well who can resist that? The challenge was accepted.
He realized raising girls was challenging and rewarding at the same time. It was rough but he got through it. He didn’t have to…he chose to and his girls grew to love him as their own father.
Family Life
Scot spent years sacrificing his own health and needs to make sure his “daughters” had what they needed.
The reward for not killing them as teenagers? Grandkids!! His oldest daughter, Kelli, gave him and Rose their first granddaughter. A blessing that became a joy for both of them. Then over the years, his other two daughters, Stephanie and Melissa, welcomed 6 more grandchildren for Grandpa and Grandma to enjoy. A few months before his death, another announcement for grandbaby number 8 was in the works. He jokingly referred to the bundle as “ocho”. His daughter asked him what he would call the baby if it was a girl. His reponse? “ocha”.
Unfortunately, Scot did not live long enough to find out if he was getting an “ocho or ocha”. (it’s a boy btw). This will be the only grandbaby he will not meet.
Career
Scot worked tirelessly while Rose studied at Northeastern University to complete her Accounting Degree.
Watching her determination and growth while earning her degree, he was inspired to get a degree himself. Being the computer whiz he was, Rose convinced him that he would have big success in IT. With her encouragement, he finished a degree in cloud computing. This accomplishment allowed him to acquire a position at his dream job Google.
He finally had something to be proud of and deserved every bit of it.
After achieving a degree in IT and landing a position at Google, Scot was finally reaping a rewarding life and after all of the sacrifices he made early on…he deserved everything good that could come his way.
Just a quick visit to his facebook page will reveal just the type of person Scot was like at work. He was not just good at his job, he was a leader that created value in the eyes and minds of his colleagues. He always made time to help people and always tried to make everyone he worked with feel completely comfortable around him. Scot held his Google family in high regard and finally found a place where his efforts were rewarded.
Volunteering
As part of Google’s family in Pryor, Scot took advantage of the opportunities to volunteer and give back.
He loved participating in their Bee initiative, caring for the beehives on Google property.
He was a key leader in the annual Dam J.A.M. Bicycle Tour in Mayes & Delaware Counties.
He also loved to help judge the annual Aerogamesnxt held at Rogers State University. The Aerogames are a place where Regional School teams design, build and fly their own drones in a robust flight and obstacle course on the Rogers State University Campus. See more details here:
